Description
Sheep nubuck is softer and lighter than the cow suede used on most of our loafers — it has a finer nap and it gives immediately rather than needing to be worn in. On a backless shoe that matters more than usual, because there is no heel counter and no strap: the whole shoe is held on by how the vamp sits across the foot, so it has to be soft enough to mould and firm enough to grip.
The lining is top-layer leather, which on a mule is the surface your foot actually spends its time against. The sole is rubber, flat, with no heel lift at all. Coverage is minimal by design — this is a shoe for the parts of the day that are neither properly indoors nor properly out: the garden, the balcony, the walk to fetch bread on holiday.
Two colourways, tan and cream, both pale enough to show their wear. Nubuck marks easily and there is no way around that; it is a material that looks better slightly used than box-fresh. Remove surface dust with a soft suede brush, working in one direction to lift the nap. Keep them away from water and treat them with a suede protector spray before first wear. Do not wipe suede with a wet cloth. If they get wet, let them dry naturally, away from direct heat, then brush the nap again.
